16 Things to Always Remove From Your Carry-On Before a Flight

Most people pack their carry-on the night before and assume everything inside is fine. It usually is not. Security lines move slowly for a reason and a surprising number of hold ups happen because of completely ordinary items nobody thought twice about. Pulling these out before leaving the house makes the whole airport experience significantly less painful.

Razor Blades

Loose blades and safety razors without their cartridge get pulled every time. Wrap them properly and move them to checked luggage before heading out.

Pocket Knives

Box cutters, Swiss Army knives, utility knives – check jacket pockets and purses too because these show up in unexpected places right when it is least convenient.

Large Scissors

Anything longer than four inches from the pivot point cannot go through. Sheath them before packing so nobody handling the bag along the way gets hurt.

Full-Size Liquids

Anything over 3.4 ounces needs to be in checked luggage. Everything liquid in the carry-on has to fit inside one quart-sized bag without exception.

Peanut Butter and Spreads

TSA treats creamy foods as liquids. Peanut butter, hummus, soft cheese, jam – anything over 3.4 ounces gets flagged at the checkpoint without fail.

Gel Heating Pads

The gel inside counts as a liquid and will get pulled. Move it to checked luggage or find a non-gel version that travels without any complications.

Cordless Hair Tools Without Covers

Lithium battery tools need a safety cover on the heating element. Without one, they will not make it through and everyone behind in line will feel it.

Hair Dryer

Takes up space and most hotels already have one waiting. Leaving it at home frees up room for things that actually need to make the trip.

Cooking Spray

Aerosol cans are fire hazards and cannot go in carry-on or checked bags. Buy whatever is needed at the destination instead.

Cast Iron Pans

Heavy enough to be classified as a potential weapon and will get pulled without any discussion. Checked luggage only if it absolutely has to come along.

Corkscrew With a Blade

Anything with a foil cutter or knife attachment does not go in a carry-on. Even plain versions can get flagged so packing it in a hard case in checked luggage is the smarter move.

Pepper Spray

Lives permanently in a lot of bags and purses and gets completely forgotten about. Take it out before leaving for the airport and check what the airline allows before putting it anywhere in luggage.

Bulky Jacket

Wear it to the airport rather than packing it. It comes off at security anyway and works as a blanket or fits under the seat once on board.

Neck Pillow

Standard ones take up more room than they are worth. An inflatable version does the same job and packs down to almost nothing when not in use.

Christmas Crackers

The snap strip inside gets treated the same way as a small explosive. Buy them at the destination or ship ahead rather than finding out the hard way at the checkpoint.

Toy Weapons

Shape is what gets flagged not the material. Foam or plastic makes no difference to a security officer looking at something that resembles a real weapon. Checked luggage only.
